Volunteering in Food Recovery Network
Food Recovery Network is a club aiming at reducing food waste. Aware of the vast food waste occurring in the United States, I was happy there was a chance to help reduce the waste. We were informed a lot about principles of food safety and the equipment needed assure hygiene in delivering. The most critical thing is to maintain the temperature out of the dangerous temperature zone. I always thought delivering food to the need is a simple gather-and-distribute process, but after joining this club I learned that many permissions are required before actually collecting the food and the temperatures and weight of perishable food are recorded before and after the delivery. All the procedure are strictly controlled under regulation. By participating, I found out having an activity actually requires cooperation from many people and communication between group members. Expressing thoughts in emails coherently and efficiently are also important since we used emails as a contact method in this club. Although the volunteering didn't go on for very long due to the shortage of food supply from suppliers. I was happy to learn about this club and also urge people to pay attention to this ongoing issue! Hopefully I can help in more food recovery activity next semester!
Volunteering in Chinese 2
Having wanting to volunteer for a while, I was glad to have the opportunity joining the "PCC-USC Volunteering program . This is my first time volunteering as a teacher assistant. Both excited and nervous, I began my first class of volunteering a few weeks after my school starts. The volunteering work wasn't as hard as I had thought, and it also inspire thoughts that I had never imagined before. Through the interaction with Chinese 2 students, I saw their struggle in putting ideas into grammarly correct sentences. I realized how hard it is for a non-native learner to learn a foreign language. Simple conversation that native speakers are used to is totally different to them . It is a combination of vocabulary and grammar and pronunciation. Paying attention to all the aspects, learning a language is really hard. for them. I also found out that for native speakers, colloquial expressions comes out first but usually confuses foreign learners since the fundamentals are not always the one used most often. This volunteering experience gave me an opportunity to look at the language I am familiar in different aspect, it is a valuable experience. I am looking forward to continue volunteering in the next semester.
